Canine Good Citizen Training, Test and Certification (AKC CGC)

The purpose of The American Kennel Club’s CGC Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.  This is a noncompetitive test and dogs are not required to perform with the same precision required in formal obedience.

This class is for dogs that have successfully completed an advanced home obedience class or with the instructor’s permission. The minimum requirements for this class are:  loose leash walking, sit, down, short stay (or wait), the ability to focus on the handler, a good temperament around people and dogs and the handler’s desire to improve upon these skills.

This class focuses on the skills needed to successfully pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test; they are listed below.  The AKC Canine Good Citizen test is open to all breeds or mixed breeds regardless of pedigree.

No treats/food or toys may be used during the test and the dog must be on a leash made of leather or fabric and wearing a well-fitting buckle or slip collars (including martingales) made of leather, fabric or chain.  They may also wear body harnesses which do not restrict movement.

**Retractable leashes may NOT be used NOR are special training equipment such as pinch collars and chain collar or head collars allowed in the CGC test.

CLASS DETAILS: Cost is $145 for a 6 week class of one hour per week.  Class size is limited to 4 dogs with handlers.  Come to your first class with your dog ready to work.  Treats, food and toys are allowed during class but again NOT allowed during the test. NO flexi leashes or pinch collars may be used in chain collars or head collars class.

TESTS AND PRETESTS: Tests and Practice Tests will be scheduled as requested or needed; there is an additional fee for these tests and a small fee to the AKC to get your dog’s CGC Title upon successfully completing the test.

The following are the skills required to pass the CGC test:
*Accept a friendly stranger
* Sit politely for petting by a stranger
* The evaluator can examine the dog’s ears and lift the front feet and softly comb or brush the dog
* Walk on a loose leash
* Walk through a small crowd politely
*Sit and Down on Command & Stay in Place
* Come when called
* Be calm around a new friendly dog
* Can stay calm around distractions: visual, sounds and movement
* Stays calm when left by the handler for a short time/supervised separation
